Vulvar Disorders
Lichen Sclerosus of the Vulva
A chronic dermatitis of the vulva that can occur at any age throughout a woman’s life. It is an auto-immune disorder and causes severe itchiness. If not managed correctly, it may result in the deformity of the vulvar anatomy. This can cause scarring and narrowing of the vaginal entrance, thus making sexual intercourse impossible. The condition often spreads to the skin around the anus, causing severe perianal itchiness. Inadequate treatment and monitoring may result in vulvar cancer.
Lichen Planus of the Vulva and Vagina
A chronic condition of the vulva and vagina that can cause severe pain and burning. It can also result in vulvovaginal cancer if not treated.
Vulvodynia
A condition causing severe pain in the vulva at the vaginal entrance. This results in the inability of women to have sexual intercourse without pain. Undiagnosed, vulvodynia can lead to significant emotional and relationship issues.
Vulvar Pre Cancer (VIN)
This condition results in a persistent lesion causing itch and irritation. VIN is diagnosed by a vulvoscopy and biopsy. It has a high risk of progressing to cancer, if not treated early enough.
Recurrent Thrush Infection of the Vulva and Vagina
Thrush is an itchy, uncomfortable condition affecting the vulva and vagina. It is caused by a fungus (yeast) called Candida, which can be chronic and resistance to topical creams.
Chronic Heavy Vaginal Discharge
There are many causes of heavy vaginal discharge. This can be normal (Ie. physiological) but may also be caused by chronic thrush or other infections. Cervical pre-cancer or invasive cancer must be excluded. Heavy discharge can also be caused by a rare condition called DIV (Desquamative Inflammatory Vaginitis).
